Climate in the media

Evaluation is an important part of any lesson plan series. The crucial question “What did I learn?” must be answered.

Climate in the media - evaluation

Evaluation can take place in many different ways and on many levels, and there are major differences in the evaluation culture from one school to another and from one country to another.

These are a few examples of evaluation techniques:

Quizzes and test

There are many tests online on the subject of “climate change and the media” which test the pupils’ knowledge of global warming.

Try for instance:

Or do an online search on your favourite search engine using the words: “quiz about global warming”

Logbook and portfolio

At the outset, every pupil can be asked to keep a logbook or make a portfolio. These can be physical – in the form of exercise books, sheets and folders – but certainly also interactive and online. Many schools have an intranet which supports blogs or wikis. Otherwise, blogger.com is a good free alternative.

The logbook and portfolio do not have to be exclusively in a written format – sound, pictures and film can also be used. On the Net, there are many online possibilities, e.g. via flickr.com and pixenate.com for sharing and editing of pictures. Photo series and films can be shown to other pupils and teachers.

Further pupil activities

On the Net, there are many teaching resources on the issue of climate change which supports this lesson plan series:

COP15's The Climate Game
This is a simulation game from the COP15 website on how to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide.
Click here to play "The climate game" from the COP15 website.

BBC Bloom – The Carbon Cutting Action Planner
Here the pupils can go through which “actions” they are willing to include in their everyday lives and what effect they will have on the emission of CO2.

BBC's “I’m Alright Jack”

Follow Jack from cradle to grave. The choices that you make for Jack will impact on the environment.

Eco agent
The EU has made an online scenario on becoming an ECO agent.
Click here to "become an ECO agent".

Are you a climate change hero?

Let the pupils take a test on the EU web page on climate change for schools:
Click here to open the test.

Today's teenagers are likely to experience the effects of climate change much more than we do today and they will be forced to address the issue. It is important that we familiarise them with what we know today so they become aware of the causes of climate change and understand what they can do to change it.
Here the teacher can also find various PowerPoints on the subject, such as teaching notes, general introduction to climate change, etc.

Young people and the climate
The EU has made this web page (many different languages) for young people using animations, videos and much more to communicate with this age group about the issue of climate change.
