This experiment for pupils in secondary school gives the pupil an understanding of the proces of measuring and analysing location based data.

How to Import Data to Google Earth

The Xplorer GLX offers several formats in which to export GPS data, including Unicode, ASCII, KML, and GPX. This wide array of formats allows for upload into many different GIS applications.

Export

Regardless of the format in which you choose to export the data from the GLX, the process is always the same. To export, the Table in the GLX must be populated with at least one measurement.

  1. Press the Home Key Home button  to return to the main menu

  2. Press the F2 F2 button to select the Table option from the main menu

  3. Press the F4 F4 button and select Three Columns

  4. Press the F4 F4 buttonto select the Table option

  5. Select Export All Data

  6. Connect a USB storage device to the Xplorer GLX and press OK.

  7. Use the arrows to navigate to Unicode.

  8. Press Select button and use the arrows to navigate to KML and select KML with Select button.

  9. Press F1  to select OK.

  10. Once the data has been exported the USB storage device, plug the flash drive into an available USB port on the computer.

  11. Import the data into the free version of Google Earth. If you choose to rename your file, do not delete the.kml extension. Open Google Earth and access the File menu at the top of the screen and select Open.

    Use the pull down menu to navigate to the USB flash drive. Select the.kml file you have exported to the flash drive and select Open.

  12. Be sure you have Google Eart installed on your computer.
    You can download the Google Earth application from Google.

    Google Earth will immediately move the map view to the coordinates of the file and display the data.

    (This requires that Google Earth is already installed on your computer).

    This is a nice way to present the experiment data on the class.
