Wind energy

Working with wind energy you might consider using the resources and suggestions listed below.

If you cooperate with another class of pupils internationally, what are the options for siting wind turbines where they are?

Wind energy activities

What are the necessary considerations when siting land-based wind turbines?

Are there any sites in the area of your school that would be suitable for wind turbines?

Are there any conflicts of interest related to the siting of wind turbines, such as nature conservation, noise nuisance or a change to the view?

Siting with windmaps on Google Earth

This is fun and easier than you might think. If you have installed Google Earth, you can download wind maps - provided by the ENVISAT satellite - as KMZ og KML files and open them in Google Earth.

On the Danish website Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy you can download wind maps of selected locations from the world and see wind data mapped onto the Google Earth globe.

Compare the wind maps with those of your region, if possible,  and, if applicable, those of the class you are cooperating with.

Where would you choose to site wind turbines in your region? Mark your proposed sitings on a map and use it to communicate and exchange information.

By clicking on the various wind turbines on the flash map from Samsø, you can see a description of them together with the energy transport locally and to the mainland.

Wind power at Cape Verde

Don't miss out on this exciting case about wind power in Cape Verde. The case explains the use of satellite photos from ESA's  ENVISAT satellite and NOGAPS when siting wind turbines.

The case was developed  for science and math classes in upper secondary in connection with the Danish Galathea 3 expedition in 2007.
